Jamila is a hilarious little girl (which you can tell from the videos) who loves to tell jokes and hang out with her family and she has a big family with lots of aunts, uncles, and cousins. She dreams of going to school, playing outside, and doing normal kid things. All those things, that are not possible right now because of her back. Her family first saw that her spine was curving at 2 years old, although they started seeing signs of a problem much younger (she was delayed sitting up, walking, and crawling). One by one, they took her to every hospital in her region. But, all the doctors said the same thing, “We can’t help you, look outside of Tanzania”. The family didn’t have the resources to do that, no matter how much they wanted to help Jamila.
During that time, her spine has gotten worse and worse and each year life gets harder and harder. She has been patiently waiting for 1.5 years, until we could find a doctor willing to help with her surgery. We are so excited to partner with Dr. Isador Leiberman and the Texas Back Institute to make this possible. Jamila will travel to Plano, TX in late summer where she will undergo surgery and recovery. The first thing she wants to do when she returns to Tanzania is show all her friends how straight her spine is.
She is so excited to come to America and wants to see snow when she’s there. Although, that may be a little hard in Texas.
